What is Shroomate?
Shroomate is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agricultural research and development organization based in Norristown, Pennsylvania. Our focus is on supporting the domestication of wild edible and medicinal mushroom species native to the United States — with the goal of making them viable for home and small-scale commercial cultivation.
Although North America is home to hundreds of mushroom species with nutritional and therapeutic value, only a limited number have been successfully cultivated under controlled conditions. Shroomate is committed to expanding this list through applied research, field documentation, and cultivation trials.
Our work involves the collection of wild mushroom specimens, along with detailed environmental data from their native habitats. We then attempt to replicate these conditions in laboratory and garden-based settings, using established mycological methods. This includes identifying appropriate substrates, environmental triggers, and symbiotic factors that contribute to successful fruiting.
When we achieve positive results, we share our findings with the broader community through our membership-based access to research data, cultivation protocols, liquid cultures, and more. Our goal is to contribute meaningful data to the field of applied mycology and to support individuals interested in sustainable mushroom cultivation.
By making a wider range of native mushrooms available for cultivation, we aim to reduce foraging pressure on wild populations while promoting biodiversity, education, and food sovereignty.
We conduct field-based exploration to identify promising edible and medicinal fungi, collect environmental and morphological data, and replicate growth conditions in controlled cultivation settings. Through our work, we aim to expand access to diverse, cultivable mushroom species while reducing ecological pressure on wild populations.
Our mission is to make wild mushrooms cultivable, accessible, and sustainable — supporting home growers, educators, and small-scale producers with research-driven tools and knowledge.

Our Mission
We conduct field-based exploration to identify promising edible and medicinal fungi, collect environmental and morphological data, and replicate growth conditions in controlled cultivation settings. Through our work, we aim to expand access to diverse, cultivable mushroom species while reducing ecological pressure on wild populations.
Our mission is to make wild mushrooms cultivable, accessible, and sustainable — supporting home growers, educators, and small-scale producers with research-driven tools and knowledge.
Our Vision
We envision a future where a broader diversity of native mushroom species can be cultivated responsibly in homes, gardens, and small farms across the country. By supporting mushroom domestication through research, experimentation, and education, we hope to contribute to:
Reduced human impact on wild mushroom ecosystems
Increased food security and homegrown nutrition
Greater public understanding and appreciation of fungal biodiversity
A resilient and community-driven model for mushroom cultivation in the U.S.
Our work serves as a stepping stone for the next generation of cultivators, citizen scientists, and conservation-minded growers.
Our Core Values
Sustainability – We prioritize practices that protect natural ecosystems and reduce the need for wild harvesting through responsible cultivation.
Scientific Integrity – We rely on evidence-based methods and rigorous documentation in both fieldwork and laboratory efforts.
Transparency & Sharing – We believe knowledge should be accessible. Our data, cultivation techniques, and results are shared openly with our community of members and growers.
Education – We are committed to teaching and learning — helping others understand fungi not just as organisms, but as allies in sustainable living.
Collaboration – We value the contributions of growers, researchers, citizen scientists, and enthusiasts. Shroomate thrives through partnership and shared discovery.
